The KV prefix is exclusively for vehicles registered on Langkawi — the duty-free island off Kedah's coast. Because Langkawi enjoys tax-free status, many cars with KV plates are higher-end imports that would be prohibitively expensive on the mainland. KV plates on the peninsula are a dead giveaway that the car originated on the island.
